Indiana Dunes Tuesday for April 3, 2012

On Tuesdays from time to time, I post a photo or two of one of my favorite places, Indiana Dunes State Park.  To learn more about the Dunes, visit http://www.facebook.com/INDUNES or http://www.indianadunes.com/

Indiana Dunes Pavilion and Arcade Hotel
Thanks to e-bay, I've come across a couple of classic Indiana Dunes State Park postcards for a couple of dollars each.  Now to find some frames for these:

The first postcard is a view from the top of a dune called Devil's Slide.  Judging from the hotel and the cars, and by looking at the postcard, maybe this is from the 1940's?  The pavilion, on the right, is still there, but the hotel, on the left, which was built in about 1930 or 1931, was demolished in 1971.

Front Gate, 1940s / 1950s
The second is the entrance to the park.  Looks to be the late 1940s or maybe early 1950s, again by looking at the cars.  The building is still there, but unused.  Until recently, a driver would exit Dunes Highway, US 12, go north on Indiana 49, straight until 49 would dead end just to the right of the pavilion.  The road has been re-routed to curve to the left and arrive at a new gate house.

Next week, to celebrate the unofficial beginning of camping season, a look at the Indiana Dunes Campground!

  1. Very nice. I remember that old entrance to the park. I am glad they kept the structures. The new entrance is very nice though. I like the improvements. And that is big considering I am not a fan of change in general!
