Our Family's Mission, Part 2 - Loving God

Last post introduced our Family Mission Statement, "Together we discover, nurture, and fulfill God's will and plan for us," as a response to our Small Group's challenge to have a family goal, and to give ideas and inspiration to whoever might be reading this.

This post is about the 1st of 4 Core Values and Strategies we have for fulfilling our goal:
Loving God by Authentic Worship
Loving others by Intentional Relationships
Loving Wisdom by Worthwhile Learning
Loving Creation by Excellent Life Experiences.
Many of us know that God's 1st and Greatest Commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. What does that mean?

The nifty catch phrase we've come up with is "Authentic Worship." For me personally, the first step in loving God is to believe He exists and rewards those who seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). In college as a young adult, I was sure God was a modern myth (like Greek mythology). But God found me and saved me. So faith is not to be taken for granted. Especially when I know plenty of family and friends who are all over the place with their thoughts of God.

It is a big responsibility to know God truly. A lot of people believe in a god, but few people really take the time to understand the person and work of Jesus Christ, the pinnacle of God's revelation of Himself. Everything before leads up to Jesus, everything since points back.

Once the real Jesus is understood, we try to live it out everyday by Bible reading, prayer, church, Sunday School, Wednesday night Bible Club (AWANA in our church), and all the expressions of faith.

It is one thing to write about it and another thing to do it, but we are striving. Don't think for a moment that we are doing it perfectly. While we are always trying to walk with God a little better, I am thankful for the progress made so far.

Later in the week: Loving others by Intentional Relationships. Oh boy!
